Review: Vortex Anarch Rangefinder
I have only ever owned one other rangefinder in my life, a solid mid-range Amazon buy that did the job but left me frustrated when the battery gave out sooner than expected. Despite that hiccup, having a rangefinder totally changed my game for the better. When I started searching for an upgrade, the Vortex Anarch immediately caught my eye. Newer to the market, but promising a lot of features and the inclusion of a lifetime warranty were immediate draws.
I play in all kinds of conditions: rain, snow, cold, and heat. The Anarch seemed to be built for everything you could throw at it in terms of weather. I have kids, which means my gear takes more tumbles than I’d like. My eyesight isn’t getting any better either, so crystal-clear optics were a priority. I don’t mind paying a premium for something if it truly delivers. The Anarch checked all my must-haves, so let’s get into it and see how it performed on its features and promises.
The Feature Checklist: Does It Deliver?
Image Stabilization
This feature is an absolute game changer. Whether my hands are cold, a little shaky, or I’m trying to lock onto a flag from a distance, the stabilization works wonders. It makes use so much easier, and beyond just getting the pin, it’s great for checking out hazards or even tracking down a lost ball. Pure precision. It also helps when scanning fairways, something I never expected but now use all the time.
Slope Mode
It works exactly as advertised. I didn’t use it much since I play in a lot of tournaments where it’s not allowed, but I love the clear green LED that shows when it’s on. (For reference, it isn’t always on but only when you start scanning) I also like that you toggle it through the menu rather than a physical switch, which could in theory be accidentally bumped. It feels well-integrated and not like an afterthought.
PinSpotter Mode
This thing locks onto the pin faster than I expected. I had a couple of misreads, but they were likely my own fault for rushing. It is also nice that it is just one click and scan where you don’t have to constantly hold it. The feedback through vibration is great, and I’d say it picks up the flag better than any other rangefinder I’ve tried, including some of the high-end ones I’ve tested from my time working in pro shops. Even on windy days, it quickly grabs onto the pin without hesitation.
Tournament Legal?
No issues here. It’s super easy to confirm that slope mode is off, so you’re always in the clear when it comes to the rules. The LED indicator ensures you know exactly what mode you’re using at all times.
Cart Magnet
Mostly great, but not flawless. It sticks well to the cart, and even to a wedge or iron for quick grabs. That said, I did have it fall off a couple on bumpy rides. No damage though, it’s built like a tank. I’d recommend giving it an extra check to make sure it’s secure before heading out.
Red Illuminated Display
Another one of those “once you use it, you can’t go back” features. Whether it’s early morning, midday, or pushing sundown, the display adjusts perfectly. There are also different brightness settings and auto setting allowing you to tailor your experience. If you’ve never used a red display, just know that it makes everything easier on the eyes. It cuts through shadows and glare better than any standard black display I’ve used before.
1-Yard Accuracy
I tested it against other premium rangefinders and my Garmin S70, and it was dead on every time. No complaints. It even held its own when tested from weird angles and longer distances.
Clear View Optics
Seriously, this thing is on another level. The glass is crystal clear, making it easy to see not just the pin but also other course details. It’s honestly in a league of its own when it comes to clarity. Even at maximum range, the view remains sharp and easy to interpret. This is what @Vortex_Golf is known for and they deliver!
Magnesium Chassis
Feels solid in the hand but not too heavy. It’s taken a few unexpected falls, yet there’s no sign of wear or damage. That says a lot. The build quality makes it feel truly premium, not just another plastic gadget.
Comfort Guard
The grip is just right. Textured, comfortable, and easy to hold even when wet. It has a nice weight to it, making it feel premium without being bulky. The rubberized outer shell provides extra durability while still feeling soft in hand. Not to mention the thing looks freaking fantastic!
Waterproof?
Played in some pretty bad weather with no problems. I haven’t dunked it in water, and I don’t plan to, but I have no doubt it would hold up fine. No fogging issues, no water seepage, and no concerns about longevity in wet conditions.
Shockproof?
Yep. And Vortex backs it up with a lifetime warranty, which is rare for golf gear. They clearly believe in their product, and after using it, I do too. Knowing that it can take a hit and keep performing at a high level adds peace of mind.
Yards or Meters?
Easy switch between the two. Since I play in meters, I was glad to see how simple it was to adjust. No complicated menu diving, just a straightforward toggle.
Where Could It Be Better?
Honestly, not much to nitpick. The only issue I ran into was in foggy weather. Lighter fog was fine, but mid to heavy fog made it struggle a bit with picking up the pin. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth mentioning. If fog is common where you play, this might be a consideration.
The price is up there, but for what you’re getting in stabilization, optics, durability, and a lifetime warranty, I’d say it’s more than worth it. The battery life has been fantastic, lasting well beyond what I expected. I’m eight months in, and it’s still going strong.
Wrap up
This is the best rangefinder I’ve ever used. And likely will ever used. The optics are elite, the image stabilization is a must-have, and the build quality is second to none. If you’re looking for a premium rangefinder, this is it.
Too long, what really matters?
- The image stabilization is next level and makes locking onto the pin super easy, even with shaky hands.
- The red display and optics are best in class, making everything easy to see in all conditions.
- Slope mode, PinSpotter Mode, and 1-yard accuracy work exactly as promised with quick and accurate readings.
- Magnet is solid, but it did fall off the cart a couple of times. A slightly stronger hold would be nice.
- Completely waterproof and shockproof, plus backed by a lifetime warranty. Built to last.
- Minor issue: Struggles a bit in fog, which is typical but still something to note.
- Worth the price? Absolutely. The performance, durability, and warranty make this a no-brainer.
@Vortex_Golf knocked it out of the park with this one. If you want the best, this is it.
